Habitus Fidei

  • Chiesa dei Santi Giovanni e Reparata. Piazza San Giovanni Lucca, Toscana, 55100 Italy (map)

Habitus Fidei - The Vestments of the Confraternities: A Journey Through Art, History, and Faith. A traveling exhibition arrives in Lucca, in the Church of Saints John and Reparata.

It began at Palazzo Lanfranchi, home of the Pisa Museum of Graphic Arts, and continues, after Tuscan stops, at Villa Ciani in Lugano. A journey to discover Italian confraternities, with a focus on ceremonial vestments, symbols, and documents that illustrate their role in different local contexts.

In addition to the vestments, liturgical objects, ancient statutes, prints, and archival materials are on display, helping to understand the practices and identity of these ancient religious associations. Thanks to its privileged location along the Via Francigena, an important pilgrimage route since the Middle Ages, Lucca has drawn religious, artistic, and cultural influences over the centuries, reflected in its confraternity traditions, which remain part of its rich spiritual and historical heritage today.

The exhibition is curated by Lorenzo Cantoni, University of Italian Switzerland; His Excellency Msgr. Paolo Giulietti; Olimpia Niglio, University of Pavia and the Archdiocese of Lucca; Alessandro Tosi, University of Pisa. The exhibition is open until October 25, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Admission is included in the ticket for the church, baptistery, and archaeological area.
