The 2025 concert season of the Lucchese Musical Association comes to an end with a highly prestigious event: the return of the The Guadagnini Quartet will perform the third installment of Dmitri Shostakovich's complete string quartets , one of the most significant cycles of the entire 20th-century musical repertoire. This concert will also feature Mozart pieces , revealing a surprising connection between the two composers.
On Saturday, November 22nd , as always at 5:30 pm in the Auditorium of the “Boccherini” Conservatory, the Guadagnini, one of the best international ensembles, will continue this important collaboration with AML, which is bringing a significant piece of musical history to the attention of the Lucca public.
Shostakovich's fifteen String Quartets, composed between 1938 and 1974, trace in music the period from World War II to the first signs of openness between the West and the Soviet Union. These pages intertwine the composer's life and European history, creating a vast and seminal body of music from the last century, requiring attention both to be understood and to be performed.
The concert will open with the String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 122 , dedicated to Vasily Shirinskij, second violin of the Beethoven Quartet of Moscow. This will be followed by the String Quartet No. 15 in D minor, K. 421/417b by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , one of the most extraordinary examples of compositional mastery known to man, for its ability to achieve a strong emotional effect on the listener. The concert closes with a return to Shostakovich, with the String Quartet No. 10 in A-flat major, Op. 11 , composed during a brief stay in Armenia in 1964.
