Lucca by Train
Lucca is well connected by regional rail. The Lucca Train Station (Stazione di Lucca) sits just outside the historic city walls — only a 5-minute walk from the gate Porta San Pietro.
From Florence: Around 1 hour 20 minutes, with frequent trains from Firenze Santa Maria Novella.
From Pisa: About 25–30 minutes, with departures every 30 minutes from Pisa Centrale
From Viareggio or the coast: Around 25–40 minutes depending on the line.
💡 Local Tip: When looking for your train platform number look for the train number NOT the destination

Lucca By Private Transfer
For a more direct and comfortable journey if you’re arriving late or have luggage, consider a private transfer.
Private drivers can meet you at Pisa or Florence Airport and take you straight to your accommodation in Lucca.
Average transfer times:
Pisa Airport → Lucca: ~40 minutes
Florence Airport → Lucca: ~1 hour 10 minutes

Lucca by Bus
Buses are a comfortable alternative if you’re travelling from nearby towns unfortunately there is no longer a service directly from Pisa Airport to Lucca. Most routes stop at Piazzale Verdi, conveniently inside the walls — perfect if you’re staying in the centre.
Typical routes:
From Pisa Centrale station: Direct service to Lucca in about 50 minutes
From Florence: Around 1 hour 30 minutes via Pistoia
From the Versilia coast: Seasonal buses link Lucca with Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi
Local tip: Bus tickets can be cheaper than the train for short trips — just make sure to check the timetable, as weekend services may be limited.
From the Airports:
Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei): Closest airport to Lucca (approx. 35 km). You can reach Lucca by train. First take the Pisa Mover monorail to Pisa Centrale and then hop on the train to Lucca (via Pisa Centrale), or private transfer.
Florence Airport (Peretola): Around 70 km away — best reached by private transfer or a combination of tram and train.
Getting Around Once You’re Here:
Lucca is famously walkable as cars aren’t allowed in most of the historic centre unless you’re a resident. The best way to explore? Rent a bike and ride around the city walls for a full circle view of Lucca’s rooftops and towers. There are also local buses for exploring cool neighbourhoods beyond the walls.
For day trips, local trains make it easy to visit Pisa, Florence, Viareggio, and even Cinque Terre without needing a car.
