Car-Free Day

The "car-free day" returns to the historic center on September 20: Lucca is participating in the European Mobility Week again this year. The Municipality of Lucca is participating in the European Mobility Week again this year, scheduled for September 16-22, 2025, with the establishment of a new "car-free day" in the heart of the city. After last year's successful pilot, the initiative will be repeated on Saturday, September 20, from 5:00 PM to midnight, with the historic center closed to traffic.

The measure, in line with the 2025 European theme "Mobility for All," envisages the suspension of access to private vehicles, with the exception of emergency and public order vehicles, local public transport vehicles, vehicles with a permit for persons with disabilities, and permits already authorized under current legislation. Access to garages and on-site parking will also be guaranteed, as will the needs of market stalls due to the concurrence of the antiques market.

With this decision, the municipal administration intends to strengthen the path undertaken towards increasingly green and sustainable mobility, improving the livability of public spaces and promoting more informed travel habits. The "car-free day" represents not only an opportunity to rediscover the traffic-free historic center, but also an opportunity to raise public awareness of the environmental and social issues related to urban mobility.
