Edward Hopper Art Exhibition

  • Palazzo Blu 9 Lungarno Gambacorti Pisa, Toscana, 56125 Italy (map)

Palazzo Blu in Pisa will dedicate its major autumn exhibition to American artist Edward Hopper, presenting more than 150 works spanning his entire career. The exhibition will be open from 14 October to 7 March 2026 and is organised in collaboration with the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

Promoted by Fondazione Palazzo Blu and organised with MondoMostre, with support from Fondazione Pisa, the exhibition will explore the places that shaped Hopper’s artistic development and imagination, including New York, Paris and the New England coast.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential American artists of the 20th century, Hopper is best known for his evocative depictions of urban life, solitude and the changing experience of modernity. His paintings have had a lasting influence on generations of artists, photographers and filmmakers.

Curated by Kim Conaty and Barbara Haskell, both of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the exhibition brings together oil paintings, drawings, etchings, watercolours and other works from the museum’s collections. It also includes comparative works by Hopper’s contemporaries, placing his artistic development within the wider context of American art.

Visitors will also have access to archival material from the Sanborn Hopper Archive, acquired by the Whitney about a decade ago. The archive includes correspondence, photographs, diaries and other documents that offer further insight into Hopper’s life and creative process.

The exhibition is organised into five thematic sections: Beginnings, Paris, New York, New England, and Jo and Edward. Together they follow Hopper’s artistic journey from his early career and formative years in France to his lifelong relationship with New York, his summers in New England, and the personal and artistic partnership with his wife, Josephine “Jo” Hopper, who played a central role in his life and work.
