Lucca will also take part in the Great global greyhound walk, the world walk dedicated to greyhounds. The initiative is promoted at a local level by the Greyhound adopt centre Italy (Gaci) Odv, under the patronage of the Municipality of Lucca.
The meeting is set at 10 a.m. at the Antico Caffè delle Mura, while the walk will start at 10.30 a.m. and will last about two hours. The appointment is open to those who want to know more closely the reality of rescue greyhounds and support the activity of the association, engaged in the recovery and conscious adoption of these animals.
The route will take place on the Walls until the San Colombano bulwark and will then continue in the historic center. The walk will also be accessible to people in wheelchairs and strollers; along the entire itinerary there will also be refreshment points.
For the occasion, a dog dressing was also chosen: the color of the day will be red, ‘red Gaci’ or ‘red love’, and participants are invited to wear and make their greyhound wear something of this shade.
Dogs must be kept on a leash. The owners must also have with them the muzzle and the bags for collecting the dejections. The municipal ordinance requiring the washing of the urine of the dogs must also be respected: those who accompany the animal must therefore be equipped with a bottle or another container of water. Otherwise, an administrative penalty is provided.
The Gaci was founded in 2002, after the failure of the last active drome in Italy, that of Rome. On that occasion the association took care of finding a new family at the 370 greyhounds present in the structure. Since then he has continued his work in favour of greyhounds from Ireland and the galgo and podenco from Spain, often victims of exploitation and abandonment.
The association organises meetings, events, gatherings and walks to raise public awareness and promote adoptions. It also brings its own activity to schools through the Gaci Scuola project.
