Christmas & Immigration

  • Palazzo Ducale 1 Cortile Carrara Lucca, Toscana, 55100 Italy (map)

Christmas has always been a family celebration, and those far from home, if possible, try to return to their loved ones, to exchange memories and gifts, gathered under a glittering tree.

The history of emigration is also a history of nostalgia, as can be seen in the numerous letters preserved in the archives of the Paolo Cresci Foundation, especially during the Christmas holidays. And Christmas, at least once upon a time, was celebrated with a nativity scene, originally made of plaster.

This tradition gave rise to a profession, widespread in the Lucca area: the figurine maker, a craftsman with artistic skills who, using humble materials but with inventiveness, created plaster figurines, especially of religious subjects.

Christmas is also a celebration, especially for children, boys and girls, who eagerly await their long-desired gifts. Unlike today, toys were once made of wood, tin, fabric, and cardboard, but with skill and even ingenuity.

Ave Marchi and Pietro Luigi Biagioni's story will unfold through vintage photographs and moving images, including a plaster nativity scene and traditional toys, to recreate the timeless Christmas atmosphere.
