Tomorrow, Julian Schnabel's masterclass, the award ceremony for Tuscan actor Lorenzo Aloi, and the preview screening of Rider , starring Davide Pavanello and Paola Kaze, will be held. The feature films in competition and the Schnabel screening will include documentaries on Umberto Eco and soldiers in World War II, and a masterclass by the first cyborg, British artist Neil Harbisson.
Tomorrow, Monday, September 28th , marks the third day of the 22nd Lucca Film Festival, which runs until October 4th. Admission is free, subject to availability, and is under the artistic direction of Nicola Borrelli and supported by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca. The day's program includes a late afternoon masterclass open to the public by American director and artist Julian Schnabel, fresh from the festival's Lifetime Achievement Award. The day begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Cinema Centrale with a screening of the film Quasi Grazia , directed by Peter Marcias. At 10:00 a.m. at the Complesso di San Micheletto, as part of Over The Real, the international video art competition, a masterclass by British artist Neil Harbisson will be held. Harbisson is recognized as the first person in the world to be granted legal cyborg status, following the integration of an antenna into his skull in 2004 that, through an algorithm, converts colors into sound frequencies and sounds.
At 3:00 PM at the Cinema Centrale, for the International Feature Film Competition, curated by Stefano Giorgi and Mattia Fiorino, the Turkish film Kurtuluş – Salvation by Emin Alper, winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale, is screened. The film, inspired by a real-life event, is set in a village on the brink of a crisis that could lead to destruction or open the way to salvation. Also at 3:00 PM, but at the San Micheletto, the Julian Schnabel film series continues with The Diving Bell and the Butterfly , starring Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Seigner. The adaptation of Jean-Dominique Bauby's autobiographical book, for which Schnabel won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival, also garnering the Golden Globe for Best Director and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. Same time, 3:00 PM, but at the Auditorium Fondazione BDM for the screening of the documentary Umberto Eco - The Library of the World , directed by Davide Ferrario, a fascinating portrait of the philosopher and writer's memory, but also a profound vision of the world's collective memory. At 4:00 PM, another film from the series dedicated to Julian Schnabel will be shown: Basquiat , his 1996 work, a biography of the painter Jean-Michel Basquiat and a glimpse into an unrepeatable artistic era. At 5:00 PM, at the Cinema Centrale, the Georgian feature film in competition, Supporting Role by director Ana Urushadze, the story of an audition for a former local movie star, somewhere between hallucination and reality, starring Dato Bakhtadze. Also at 5:00 PM at the San Micheletto, a festival dedicated to Saint Francis, on the occasion of the eighth centenary of his death, organized and coordinated by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, will feature a classic of world cinema, Roberto Rossellini's Francis, Jester of God (1950), a narration of the Saint's life in a series of nine independent episodes taken from The Little Flowers of Saint Francis and The Life of Brother Juniper. Also at 5:00 PM, but at the Auditorium Fondazione BDM, a screening of Inside Buffalo , directed by Italian-American director Fred Kudjo Kuwornu, a documentary about some soldiers of the 92nd Division and also some Italian partisans, who fought alongside them during the Nazi retreat at the end of the Second World War.
At 6:00 PM at the Astra Cinema, a masterclass open to the public by American director, screenwriter, and artist Julian Schnabel, moderated by Alessandro Romanini. At 9:00 PM, actor Lorenzo Aloi will take the festival stage to accept the New Protagonists Award and present the preview screening of Rider , written, directed, and scored by Roan Johnson and Davide Pavanello (aka Dade). The film was presented at the recent Venice International Film Critics' Week and will be released in theaters on October 8th by I Wonder Pictures. The film will also be presented tomorrow by co-director Davide Pavanello and actress and singer-songwriter Kaze ( Call My Agent Italia ). The film is an urban musical also starring Johnny Marsiglia, Ensi, Axos, Rosa Chemical, and Levante, with the participation of Margherita Vicario and Claudio Santamaria. Samuele, known as Sami, is a young rider who spends his days pedaling around Milan, moving from one part of the city to another. On New Year's Eve, when the city is ablaze with glittering lights, Sami delivers a huge order of sushi to a sumptuous villa on the northern outskirts of Milan. Invited to stay for the evening, Sami meets Nia, and the two are instantly drawn to each other. But just as love is about to blossom, an impulsive decision will force Sami to decide whether or not to face the consequences of his actions...
