Cinema Centrale presents Barry Lyndon a 1975 film directed by Stanley Kubrick.

The story centres on Redmond Barry (Ryan O’Neal), a handsome, penniless young Irishman who is in love with his frivolous cousin Nora (Gay Hamilton).

At the outbreak of the Seven Years’ War, a military regiment stops in the small village of Barry, and Nora falls for Captain John Quinn (Leonard Rossiter), a highly sought-after suitor due to his wealth.

While the young woman’s family hastily arranges the wedding, Barry plots revenge and challenges his rival to a duel. Unexpectedly, Redmond emerges victorious from the duel, but is forced to flee to Dublin with a horse and a few coins.

After being robbed, Barry is forced to enlist, even though he detests military life. Fortune smiles on the young man once again, as he earns the trust of his superiors and follows the troops into German territory.

One day, however, Barry learns that Nora’s family had rigged his pistol and that Quinn, having survived the duel, has married his beloved cousin.

Bitter and terrified by the cruelty of war, Barry seizes the opportunity to desert and pose as a messenger for General Percival Williamson, setting off for Bremen.

During the journey, the young man falls into Captain Potzdrof’s trap; having discovered that Barry is a deserter, Potzdrof offers him a chance to make amends by enlisting in the Prussian army.

Disheartened and terrified by the cruelty of war, Barry seizes the opportunity to desert and pose as a messenger for General Percival Williamson, setting off for Bremen.

During the journey, the young man falls into Captain Potzdrof’s trap; having discovered that Barry is a deserter, Potzdrof offers him a chance to make amends by enlisting in the Prussian army. On the battlefield, Barry is once again blessed by luck, and after saving his general’s life, he is rewarded with a low-risk espionage mission targeting Chevalier de Balibari (Patrick Magee).

The two men form a friendship and, taking advantage of a series of misunderstandings, decide to swap identities so that de Balibari can remain in Prussia and Barry is free from military obligations. Bolstered by his new identity, the Irishman becomes a very famous figure, and his good looks win over the young Countess Lady Lyndon (Marisa Berenson).

When the woman’s first husband dies of natural causes, Barry marries Lady Lyndon, who bears him a son, little Bryan. Family harmony, however, is threatened by the animosity of Bullingdon (Leon Vitali), who is determined to thwart Barry by any means necessary.Cinema
