Henry Spencer, a printer, lives alone in a squalid apartment amidst the hallucinations that his sick mind visualizes. During a grotesque lunch at his in-laws' house, he learns that Mary, his girlfriend, is pregnant and is forced to marry her. A hideous and whining 'baby' monster is born that the disgusted mother abandons to Henry's care, who, exasperated, kills it. From the decaying body of the little one emerge strange beings that infest the house and Henry's life.
