The Silence of the Composers Concert

  • Boccherini Auditorium (map)

On Wednesday, September 24th at 9:15 PM, the Luigi Boccherini Auditorium hosts the concert "The Silence of the Composers," celebrating female composers Clara Wieck Schumann and Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn

The event marks the announcement and awarding of the winners of the 2024/2025 competition for original female compositions and, at the same time, a tribute to two extraordinary figures of Romantic music: Clara Wieck Schumann (1819-1896) and Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn (1805-1847). At once delicate and powerful, their chamber works resonate today as a testament to female creativity.

The program features two masterpieces: Clara Schumann's Trio, Op. 17, written in 1846, the composer's only chamber work, considered among the pinnacles of her output for its emotional intensity and refined instrumental writing; and Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn's Trio, Op. 11 in D minor by Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn, composed in 1846 and published posthumously in 1850, which stands out for its formal originality – replacing the scherzo with a lied – and for the freshness of the melodic inventions, especially in the finale.

Performing them will be an exceptional trio led by renowned violinist Michael Guttman, born in Brussels in 1957, a soloist and chamber musician acclaimed in the world's greatest theaters, from the Barbican in London to the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, to Avery Fisher Hall in New York. A student of the Juilliard School, Guttman plays a precious 1735 Guarneri and founded the Pietrasanta in Concerto festival in 2006, which he still directs.

Joining him on stage will be cellist Fabia Simini and pianist Luca Pieruccioni.

The concert will be enriched by stage readings by Simona Bottiglioni and Federica Guerra, who will intertwine the music with the composers' letters and diaries.

The evening is organized in collaboration with the Luigi Boccherini Conservatory of Music, the Luigi Boccherini Study Center, the Friends of Pietrasanta in Concerto, Diafonia Pietrasanta, and Millemètrica.

Admission is free until seats are filled. MORE INFO
