May 28 marks exactly 220 years since the death of Luigi Boccherini. To celebrate the anniversary, the Associazione Musicale Lucchese is offering the concert "Omaggio a Boccherini" (at 9 pm at the Conservatory auditorium, in Piazza del Suffragio), organized in collaboration with the Centro Studi Boccherini and the Conservatory that bears the musician's name.

COMMEMORATION IN THE CHURCH OF SAN FRANCESCO

The celebrations for the 220th anniversary of Boccherini's death will begin on Wednesday 28 May at 4:30 p.m. , with the official commemoration open to the public in the church of San Francesco , where the composer's remains rest. In the presence of the mayor Mario Pardini, the president of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, Massimo Marsili, and the president of the Luigi Boccherini Study Centre, Marco Mangani, a wreath of flowers will be laid in front of the tombstone and a short string performance will be performed .

The event offers a program entirely dedicated to the composer from Lucca: theSonata in C major no. 6, G 6 for cello and basso continuo, the Trio in D major Op. 14 no. 4, G 98 for violin, viola and cello, and the famous Quintet in D major no. 4, G 448called Fandango, for guitar and strings. The introduction to the evening will be entrusted to Marco Mangani, president of the Centro Studi Boccherini.

The musicians Paolo Ardinghi, Anna Barbati and Chiara Bosco on violins, Elisabetta Cordoni on viola, Massimo Raccanelli and Livia Civello on cellos, and Dario Vannini on guitar will perform on stage.

“The concert program – says Marco Mangani – represents a significant excursus in Boccherini's chamber music writing: from the Sonata G 6 , which highlights the cello's cantability and virtuosity, to the Trio G 98 , an example of his clear and elegant writing, up to the famous Fandango G 448 , in which the influence of Spanish culture blends in an extraordinary way with Italian classical taste. It is a tribute to his refined and cosmopolitan art, capable of speaking even today with a lively and original voice. I thank the Associazione Musicale Lucchese and the Luigi Boccherini Conservatory of Music for their collaboration”.
